I used to wear Swatches and Tissots that cost in the few hundreds of dollars, but I recently upgraded to something far above that in value. My parents gave me a beautiful graduation timepiece sometime in late May 2015 and I have been excitedly wearing it around. It is an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, it also has a dual time feature which is great because I travel around so much between New York, London and Singapore. I just keep the main hands on London time and the dual time on New York/Singapore time because one is 5 hours ahead and the other is 5 hours behind. It works great for me, and I am so in love with it. Not to mention the fact that people who are in the know about watches always compliment me on it, and even those who know little about watches take long glances at it. The truth is that the Royal Oak design is easily distinguishable and has this allure to it that signifies classiness. A little backstory on this baby: It used to belong to my grandfather before he passed, so it is a family heirloom. Mum bought it for Continue reading Prized Possessions: My New Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Dual Time → audemarspiguetdualtimeroyaloakwatch Prized Possessions The best things in life are free. And I have always wondered, how much do I have to earn to buy myself all the luxury items I have ever wanted? I thought it’d be fun to make a list of all my dream possessions and calculate how much they would cost. That would give me some idea of how much I would have to earn to afford them. Here is the list of things I want most in my life right now, and their corresponding price. May 2, 2015 TheSuitedSavant Leave a comment I do not know whether it is true that the average millionaire has seven sources of income, but the thought has been on my mind since I read it in an article somewhere. At the end of the day, getting rich is about having lots of cash coming into your pocket, and most rich people have more than one stream of income. In essence, rich people get rich by making diverse investments and getting paid from these different sources simultaneously. But how does one go about even getting a second stream of income? As someone with only one stream at the moment, reading this for the first time made me realize just how many investments most millionaires have. Sure you could invest in early stages of the next Facebook or Google, but what are the chances of that happening? For most ordinary people, the key to wealth is to create multiple streams of income. Now I know it must sound crazy that anyone can receive seven sources of income. How in the world can anyone have seven different sources of income? Well, I tried to find out what these seven sources were, and the best answer I found indicated that they are: 1. Earned Income – Money that you earn from your job. I have project after project after project, all due at the same day, to different people. All are equally important and I can’t slip on any of them. As a result, I only slept two hours last night and today, tired and completely dysfunctional as I was I have to work. It’s at moments like these that I ask myself why I am putting in so much time and effort. It’s always so sad thin I have to work. It’s at moments like these that I ask myself why I am putting in so much time and effort. It’s always so sad to think that those of us who want to succeed in this generation will have to work longer hours than those in the generation before us. Our quality of life is only as high as it is because we are working harder. As I go through this process myself, I thought I’d share some of the things I am personally changing once I graduate: I need to start making more money than I spend. I need to be cash flow positive at all times, which means that I need to be net positive at the end of every month and begin accumulating wealth. The implications of this goal, to me, means that I may need to hold down more than one job and find ways to make a second stream of income at this early stage in life. That’s mostly because as a junior, pay is still pathetically low. There’s no way l can become rich without doing something to give me more income than my primary job. Working harder may also mean having to sacrifice time that other people my age would otherwise spend partying or socializing. A tough, but necessary choice in my opinion. I need to seriously take care of my health. Stop smoking cigarettes altogether, cut down on alcohol, and implement a workout regime that I can keep to. Enough said. I need to be smarter than the rest, because it matters. Unlike when I was in college, being smarter than my peers no longer just means getting a better grade. Now, being smarter means getting ahead in business and ergo, in career success. This is where knowledge really becomes an investment. I need to make significant investments in myself. I need to make good decisions in relationships. No more fucking around. No more making superficial friends. The people I meet at this point in life can and will be helpful to me. They, too, are investments either in my career or in my happiness. They matter far more, and the space to make bad decisions on this front is really really small. Be contactable, at all times and in all places. And stay in contact with good people. There it is, my 5 major points that I will have to change for myself permanently before i graduate in the next month. I will be better, I will be stronger. In about two months, one dangerously successful person will be entering the workforce. Prized Possessions Prized Possessions: April 2015 April 24, 2015 TheSuitedSavant 1 Comment Whiskeys -> Oh boy, has this past month been the month of whiskeys. I would like to feature three whiskeys that I bought recently, one that is in a medium price range, one that is expensive, and one that is really expensive. I will review them all here. The expensive one -> Johnnie Walker Blue Label ($200-$250) Johnnie Walker Blue Label This gem needs no introduction. I’m not going to pretend I am an expert on this whiskey beyond recognizing that it is the smoothest, easiest-to-drink whiskey in the world. It also gives you a good kind of tipsy, and never leaves you with a hangover the next day. We threw a party at my apartment last night and I got hammered. I woke up this morning hurting everywhere -my head, my throat, my stomach especially. It hurt so much, I wanted to vomit. It was like dying. No kidding, it actually is like that -scientific studies have shown that the pain from a hangover is identical to dying from dehydration. That’s because a hangover is essentially when there’s no more water in your body, and your organs cannot process all the alcohol. That’s why you wake up the next morning with your breath still smelling like booze. Cartagena is a beautiful town, and it’s tourism’s next big holiday destination, so if you’re reading this you should go soon before it becomes overrun. It was absolutely gorgeous and had elements of Sevilla mixed with the Caribbean. The city reminded me of Malacca, only more beautiful. The atmosphere was great, and flying 6 hours south from NY to get away from the cold was the perfect way to celebrate Spring Break. Cartagena itself is quite an international city which caters to an international crowd. I tried to find something to bring back that was uniquely Colombian, but to no avail. I don’t know how exactly that influenced me to start writing about Singapore, but anyway, when he died I really wanted to write a heartfelt eulogy about him and to write about how he has made Singapore what it is today. I didn’t want to post it on Facebook because somehow that seemed weird. I didn’t want to write it in one of his memory books alongside millions of other people. I also wanted to write something with the comfort of anonymity, so this seemed like the best way to do it. Start a website that I dedicate to myself and my thoughts, but have the prologue be about my hero and what he meant to me. More on that later. I studied political science in college. For years, I wrote articles about global issues and wrote papers about political theory. I love politics and I didn’t mind. But I never really got to write about tiny little Singapore. The fact of the matter is that it is too small, too neutral, too vanilla to be in any way impactful to the issues that students of political science care about. So I spent years writing papers on the US, the UN, China, ASEAN, whatever, but never about Singapore itself.
